Bullying trial takes on new significance

The bullying trial of Jason Thomas has been dragging on for a couple of years now in Bossier District Court.  Thomas was originally charged with cyber bullying against Danielle Cox, a minor.
ur not important’
On January 24th, 2011, one of Danielle’s friends had posted Danielle’s number on Facebook and asked that her friends text her and tell her not to kill herself. Rather than offering help, the state alleges that Thomas used a program called ClamTXT to send multiple messages to Danielle’s phone, each purporting to come from a different person. The messages read ‘I won’t miss u’, ‘ur not important’ and ‘just end it all’.
On January 25th Danielle ingested an excessive amount of medication in a suicide attempt. She survived.
In February Thomas was arrested on the Cyber Bullying charge. On May 20th, 2011, Danielle did kill herself. The charge was amended to Criminal Assistance to Suicide.
There will be a status hearing on Tuesday to see if the case is ready to go to trial. I’ll keep everyone posted on that.
I’m not going into any detail on the most recent bully related suicides, but will note that both occurred very recently.
Two more students are victims
In light of two more suicides that are bully related, this case does take on new significance. What I’m about to say isn’t accusatory, but facts are facts.
A bad problem exists, and it is centered around South Bossier, Elm Grove Middle School and Parkway High School.  The Parkway band can’t make overnight trips for the next two years because of an incident that happened in April. Eight band members simulated a sex act on a freshman boy against his will as the students were walking to the bus. That is co-incidental to the suicides, and not nearly as serious, but it does reflect the culture that exists where bullying seems to have some acceptance.
Part of the solution
Obviously, something has to be done. As I said, I’m not being accusatory and blaming the schools for children killing themselves; I’m not saying that the schools are the cause of the problem.
However, they certainly need to be part of the solution. Something has to be done, and it will take people uniting and forcing action.
We’ll delve into this deeper in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, to find out more, you can go to Facebook and check out these two pages:

  1. I actually got the state involved this winter with bullying against my middle schooler at Elm Grove. It's gotten worse and we're trying to find another school for next year.

    1. I was bullied by BCPD LT Jimmy Stewart, he told me if I didn't stop calling the Station {drop my assault case} he would arrest me for filing a false report, this was before any of my witnesses were interviewed.

    2. Funny Bone Guy, How day you compare your non-issue to the problems that led to the death of a young girl? You're one sick little man.

Jim, Please block this moron! He has crossed way over the line of decency.

  2. I'm kinda torn on this issue. I don't think we should be passing laws. Instead I think we should teach our kids how to stand up to bullies. When I was a student I stood up to people who bullied others. Of course I didn't go to school when there was the Internet. I think the Internet makes it easier to bully. Having said that I feel we are becoming a nanny state by asking lawmakers to pass such laws.

  3. The internet and cellphones definitely contribute. What we are dealing with, as I said above, is a case of a high school senior picking on a freshman girl, diabetic, emotionally unstable. Her family got her counseling and help. I think there are enough laws in place, I just believe they need to be enforced. And I believe that the school board needs to be very proactive in educating kids about bullying. All they have done so far is issue statements saying they have procedures in place.

    2. Lt Jimmy Stewart told me that if I keep calling the Station in an effort to get Justice for an Assault where two ligaments in my shoulder were torn, he will have me arrested for filing a false report, and this was before any of my witnesses were interviewed. This is how the BCPD does Business.

  10. BJ Sanford why did you not use the right comedian's name in the Funny bone Report. Why did you give me the wrong person's last name that assaulted me. Why did you not get a warrant for the person that assaulted me. Why was this assault covered up, in my opinion. Why did Jimmy Stewart threaten me?

  11. This does not count for Captain Jimmy Stewart with the BCPD. It does not count to victims of crimes that fall under him. And even if caught he want take a polygraph, He can threaten victims like he did me in the funny bone case.

  12. I don't know who wrote this last post but Captain Jimmy Stewart did threaten me in the Funny Bone Case. And if he says he did not, then I guess that makes him unfruitful, in my opinion.

  13. A Captain with any PD in no way has the right to threaten a Victim without just cause. and the gentlemen that wrote in portending to be Captain Jimmy Stewart saying he would not take a polygraph, The Captain has to do whatever he is told to do,
