Dr. Rogers selected for Council

Former Bossier City Councilman Dr. James Rogers was chosen out to serve in the District 5 seat left vacant by the resignation of Chubby Knight.  The vote was 4-2, with Jeff Darby and David Jones voting for Larry Hanisee.
A special election will be held in this fall's regular elections for someone to serve out the term.  We'll be looking at the different candidates as the year progresses.

  1. I wonder how Dr. Rogers will vote on the final vote for raising the Fleet Services Directors salary by $11,400.00 at the next meeting?

  2. Either way he votes - he is only one vote. that is part of the democratic process. Initial vote was 5 to 1 - so even if vote is 5 to 2 it still happens.

  3. Why is he getting such a big raise? Why doesn't the police and fire receive the money back that was taken from them first? Bubba Williams or David Jones if your read this can give us an answer?

  4. Fire and Police each received a $400 per month raise in the years leading up to the "budget crisis". No money was taken from any Fire or Police. the City is required by State Statute to give all fire and police a 2% raise for every year they serve fro the 3rd year of service through the 23rd year of service. Employees of the city other than Fire and Police are not protected under State Statute and have not received ANY raises or pay increases since 2009. No money was "taken from the police and fire......"

    And apparently you are getting your facts from the Tea Party. All of my facts are spelled out in State Statute and the City Budgets for the last three years. Check it out if you have the time or patitude to understand such things.

    Go read ordinance 1 & 2 of 2010. If you still don't see where they took money from the police and fire then you and I will have to just agree to disagree.

  9. What about the rest of the City Employees that are not Fire or Police?? These departments sustained the majority of the personnel/budget cuts in order to lessen the cuts to Fire and Police. These employees have not gotten the 2% raise for the past 2 years (2010 & 2011) and will probably not get one in 2012. These are the same departments that took staff reductions and have heeded to the City Council's advise to learn to do MORE WITH LESS!!! SO THAT DOG WON'T HUNT (FOR EVERYONE HAS MORE RESPONSIBILITY AND WORK LOAD NOT JUST THE PRECIOUS FLEET SERVICES DIRECTOR/HUNTING CLUB FLUNKIE)

    Your absolutely right. I say police and fire because I know the facts regarding those departments. I absolutely agree in that every department and their employees should have everything returned to them before any raises are given.

    You are correct that in Ordinance 1 the City Council eliminated the Education Incentive for the Police Department Employees - something that I might add - no other City Department other than Fire and Police receive for college degrees. I might also add that the City usually pays for this education also through tuition reimbursement. So why should the City pay twice for the same education. As for Ordinace 2 - Paragraph 3 indicates that there is a hiring and wage freeze for all EXCEPT those required by law. Law in this case in Louisiana Revised Statutes and the City is "required" by law to give Fire and Police a 2% raise for every year served from the 3rd year of service through the 23rd year of service.

  12. Tuition reimbursement was elimated also. The second part reads "required by law". The requirements by law is the bare minimum that they must offer. For 30 plus years the city has offered an educational incentive and longevity pay for your entire career. That's what you were promised as an incentive to come work for Bossier City because they had to compete with the other agencies. If they want to change the rules that's fine but it should start with the new hires. As far as other departments, I'm all for them getting whatever they are worth also. Think about this. BCPD is the lowest paid agency in the area. So if you start scraping the bottom of the barrel for applicant keep your frame of mind. We use to attract officers from other agencies. We now lose officers to those agencies.

  13. I've got a question? Who screwed up the Haynesville Shale deal. Wasn't Bossier offered something like $70 million but instead we got nothing? Anyone have any insight on that?

  14. Bossier was never offered any money for the Haynesville shale. The city put alot of right of way up to bid on but NO one ever bid on it

  16. Probably, but they only bid on it every couple of months when the State Mineral board meets. The problem with bidding on right of ways ( streets, alleys, etc. ) is there is no where close to put a rig. The only place where there is enough land is by the Century Tel Center
