Police Officers Memorial Day and Police Week

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.
Tim Prunty
Today we all need to take time to remember Sergeant Tim Prunty of the Shreveport Police Department, who was shot and killed in an ambush attack on October 24, 2010.
He was standing next to his patrol car outside of a convenience store on Bert Kouns Industrial Loop when another car pulled into the parking lot and the driver opened fire on him. Though he was struck by several rounds, he was able to return fire before collapsing, protecting a civilian in the process. He was transported to LSU Health Science Center where he succumbed to his wounds.

Trey Hutchison
We always remember Bossier City police officer Trey Hutchison, who was shot to death on August, 11 2004 as he arrived at a house to investigate a 911 call.
Every day every police officer who reports for duty makes himself a target. Please, take the time this week to personally tell a police officer ‘thank you’ for the service that they offer to all of us.

  1. God bless them. They work for very little pay and suffer abuse from thugs and don't complain. Maybe some day we will get our priorities straight and pay the most deserving people a decent wage.

  3. The citizens stand behind us and know what we deal with. It's the city council and city attorney who doesn't have the guts to put on a uniform and come out and do what we do. They won't even participate in a ride-a-long. Can't wait for the elections.

  4. My husband is in law enforecement and I work with the BCPD. It is really sad to see the small amount of money they take home for the risks they take every day. They certainly don't take those jobs for the money. We should stop everyday to thank the policemen and the service men. It is normally a "thankless" job.

  5. 2:32, You are completely correct in that you don't go into law enforcement for the pay. We go in to it for the satisfaction of the job and in the good of helping others. Most law abiding citizens have no issues with law enforcement officers even if they do have encounters with them. It is the few that believe they do not have to follow the laws that have been established.

Just like our military all public safety workers are underpaid and under appreciated.

  6. What does a policeman or a fireman get paid? I just got out of 4 years of college and I am curious.

Varies with different agencies. Generally fire depts pay around 28K to 35K starting out. Law enforcement is about the same although some area depts are starting in the 35K to 40K range.

  8. Bossier City police department is the lowest paid agency in the area. They use to offer college incentive pay but the city council took that away.

  9. I believe the people of Bossier City stand firmly behind the officers who protect us. When the City was in a "financial crisis" they cut their pay and education incentives but seemed to find money for other things. Now that the Council recently "found" six million or so extra dollars it's time to reinstate these cuts.
