Self Promotion on the back of a family's grief

Some people have no shame.
Scott Tubbs, who I’ve written about before (see Rollin' with the Big Dawgs), has some videos up on You Tube about the suicide of a Bossier City employee.
I won’t name that employee out of respect for his family, nor will I link to the YouTube videos. What happened isn’t a secret, and a lot of you probably already know the details.
This person had worked for the City for a number of years and was well thought of. To set the background, he shot himself in a parking lot at an apartment complex.
Scott Tubbs, who owns a used appliance store, heard about it and went to the scene and made a video of the police coming and going, and of the vehicle itself. Thankfully, the windows were covered and he couldn’t see inside.
A Bossier City police officer came over to Tubbs while he was filming and suggested – out of respect – that he not do it.
Tubbs explained that he has an internet news site and was doing it so he could report on it. I haven’t been able to find any internet news site operated by Tubbs, but he does have a YouTube account.
Tubbs put the video on YouTube, along with three others basically stating the same thing in each.
In the description on the video of the scene he states:

  • Local Police department Violates Rights to freedom of press
  • LISTEN as the police Officer TELLS us not to film

When you watch that video and listen to the conversation, the officer clearly ASKS him not to make the video. Mark Natale, the Spokesman for the City, who Tubbs refers to as “Mark - the bald headed white guy”, clearly tells him “It’s not against the law, out of respect he’s asking you not to do that.”
Tubbs agreed and the video ended.  Clearly the police officer did not tell him not to film, he asked him to stop. He was not told that he had to stop, and he was clearly told that it was not against the law. It was a request, and Tubbs honored that request. So far as the police department violating the rights to freedom of the press, as far as I can tell, the press wasn’t on the scene. They don’t usually report on suicides.
In the ensuing videos, Tubbs explains why he is ‘pissed off’, that the people have a right to know this stuff.
Why?
I blog about a lot that goes on in Bossier, and I heard about this incident right after it happened. I didn’t blog about it. It had nothing to do with governance or with the operation of the city or of this person’s particular department.
Just because you can do something, and because you have the right to do it, doesn’t necessarily mean that you should do it.
The tipoff came in a statement that Tubbs made on one of the videos.
“I may seek the mayor’s office of the City of Bossier City.”
Besides his ill-fated run for President of the United States, he threatened years ago to run for Shreveport mayor against Keith Hightower.
He can do that, despite a felony conviction for arson. He received a ‘first-offender’ pardon for that act.
Mr. Tubbs, if you want to run for mayor, then do so. I'm sure that Lo Walker is as concerned about that as Keith Hightower was.
But please – take the videos down. They are really offensive.

I knew the deputy marshal and his wife. His wife is a friend and colleague of my wife, and she is also my friend. I can honestly say that the deputy marshal's wife is one of the kindest and lovable people I know. She and her family desrves better. Even if I didn't know the lady I would say she and her family deserves better. There's a reason incidents like this aren't mentioned in the media. A death in any family is a tragedy, but a death that leaves nothing but questions with no answers is beyond a tragedy. (I know because a spouse of a close friend of mine took their life and the pain was nothing I had ever seen before. The wounds NEVER HEAL, NEVER!) Scott, you don't know me nor I you, but if you had one ounce of decency in your body you would pull the videos and allow this family to gather their thoughts and pick up the pieces to mend their shattered lives in peace.
I'm not ranting or calling you names or wishing you the worse, because I want you to see I'm being earnest in what I'm saying. Please do the right thing.

  4. Seems like a double standard here in NWLA. Remember the suicide of Vince Foster? Right wingers set the precedent, and then yell foul when others follow the trail they blazed. The Republicans taught us way back then that there is political hay to be made when someone in the government commits suicide.

  5. Scott Anthony Tubbs has sunk to a new low, which is pretty amazing, because he is already lower than a snakes belly. This man looks for any opportunity to file complaints against officers and will find any little wheezle way to scam money from law enforcement agencies. Scott Tubbs, Karma WILL catch up with you one day. And I will be there LAUGHING!

  13. I personally believe there is a story to this situation. However, now is not the time for it. Let the family grieve and respect their privacy now. When it is time to tell the story or investigate this bizarre situation and the circumstances which lead to it, I can promise you I don't want to hear it from this WACKO Scott Tubbs.

I went to school with Scott tubbs - he was a nobody then - but always wanted to be somebody - he has struggled in life because of some sort of serious mental health issue - the ridiculousness of a guy that sells junk washing machines running for president - then inviting attention to it - he even made a video and paid people to put him in and out of limo's like he was some sort of rock star - how sad and depressing his life must be everyday to have taken the time to go video tape the fall of a good man - not only is Scott an idiot and a wanna be - but he has no character and is scum - he has gone from a nobody in highschool to that crazy guy that most likely is on his way to living under a bridge

I agree with you on your statement about The Inquisitor,,, that is one RAG of a paper claiming to be news.

Yet you we have to take our hat off to the editor and publisher, he/she knows how to capitalize in the name of creating fear among the populous.
It also capitalizes on this 1984ish George Orwellian-ish police state we are living and growing into.
$$$$$$$$ in the pocket, Wish I thought of it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. The only reason there is a story in the Inquisitor is because Danny Lawler didn't get the business from Marvin. Lawler is a businessman first and a good samaritan second. That is why you don't hardly read any negative press about Bossier City officials. He is really not that much different than Scott Tubbs.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jim, this is Danny Lawler with The Inquisitor. A mutual reader contacted me about the posts made about the ongoing investigation into the DA's Office in Bossier. Yes, I have to agree with the blogger that I didn't know to look into the DA's Office records until Schuyler Marvin, through his DA investigator Buddy Mondello started sending drug seizure vehicles to a dealer only auction. He's right about that. But when we started digging into that, and followed the money trail, we began to unearth incredible information - Stuff you just can't make up if you wanted to. Jim, if you want to do a story for yourself, I will be happy to provide you with the documentation to do your own stories or will provide you with the last three weeks of articles that we have published. I would however like to respond to your blogger's comment about revenue from the DA's Office. I just looked up the amount of sales volume that we have received since 2004 from the Bossier District Attorney's Office. It's a little over $93,000 since 2004 (that's eight years worth). Out of that, based on a 10% commission, which is what we charge for selling cars valued over $1,000, our commission is slightly more than $9,300. Divide that by eight years. That's an average of $1,162 per year. Now, lets consider the fact that we sell our newspapers for $2 per issue. I would only have to sell 581 more papers per year to make up for that loss of revenue, and I can assure you that we are selling far more in one WEEK in Bossier to make up for that. So for you to suggest that it's about not getting Marvin's auction business, you're way off base. Furthermore, the way we discovered that he was selling the vehicles at a dealer only auction was because the dealers were buying them there and bringing them to our auction to resell, and often doubling their money! So I was getting some of that lost business back anyway. So no, I'm not being a good samaritan. I'm getting paid quite well for our award-winning investigative work. I'm doing my job. I took an oath to my readers...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Danny,
Thanks for your response. As a loyal reader of your newspaper I was really upset with you when you started investigating Larry Deen then quit. Anyone with inside information knows you and ole Larry cut a deal so that's why you stopped your investigation on him. Thank you for again for the story. All the honest people in Bossier say it's about time they are exposed. If you want, his buddy Jimmy Hall is just as sorry. Start investigating him and you'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think danny lawler exposes a lot of good stories we would not otherwise hear about. And I think it has some value. The only problem is Danny does not have much credibility. Most of us couldn't be in a business where we profit on exploiting other's mis-steps for profit. Anyone that keeps up with danny's paper knows he is a bully and picks on easy prey or in this particular case, someone he has a grudge against. That is not consistent with "taking an oath with my readers" as danny puts it. And putting a spin on stories and embellishing the facts does not lend to good reporting. I think if lawler was ever investigated from the inside out, now that would be a real eye opener.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The problem is that he has too much credibility, he doesn't care who it is it goes in his paper.

    ReplyDelete

  28. credibility is the quality of being believable or trusted. when it comes to lawler, as a previous poster mentioned he was hot on the trail for larry deen for a few weeks in a row, then suddenly the paper shifted to a front page article of how great a sheriff deen was-if you call that believable or trustworthy you are either lawler yourself or need a refresher course on integrity

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't particularly care for the inquisitor, but there is a lot of shady deals going on in Bossier-period. They need to be exposed. We are getting as bad as South Louisiana.

You got 10 days off because you went in and identified yourself as a Bossier Sheriff in order to try and get your boyfriend's mom a better deal on a washer. Then when you realized you had screwed up, you gave a fake name claiming to be a prominent local lawyer's niece or something. Denied for promotion? Didn't you make Sgt. after this incident? Why don't you also talk about the other incidents that led to your separation with the sheriff's office? Lending your patrol car to McConnell to take campaign photos? Calling KTBS about last years tax news before the meeting was even over with? Why didn't you just put your name, because yes we all already know who "you know who" is? Yes Scott Tubbs is crazy, but you're not far off.

  34. Michelle, no relation to the attorney.May 14, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Proud Deputy, or should I just identify as one of the good ol' boys who drank the koolaid? Hi There! This IS Michelle, and I, unlike you, are not afraid to say who I am. I have nothing to loose, and nothing to hide. Your facts are off - but I would be happy to set the record straight for you. The lady I helped was my then boyfriends elderly aunt, who I had met for the first time. I never spoke until he degraded her. After I walked outside, HE followed me out the door ... did you see that on the video? Oh, you didn't see that did you? You just judged me on perception, huh? Okay .. carry on. TWO unrelated witnesses, one a employee of the store, heard him ask, "What is her name and who is she on the phone with?" I walked back in and answered. My first name and the name of the attorney I was calling. THAT WAS MY MISTAKE, because out of anger, I did not clarify my full name and the attorneys name separate. I never denied that. MY phone records were investigated and CONFIRMED I WAS calling that attorney. I was already a Sgt. at the time, and I received ten days no pay. Of course, being an employee there, females have no right to stand up in a LE capacity. But you know that, don't you? Females on patrol? Hahahaha, not under THIS administration! Overstepped my bounds didn't I? As far as my support for Sheriff, I was proud of McConnell's ideas, even though I knew Whittington was the leading candidate and would step into the position. I have high hopes for Whittington and I am proud the see the moral of the department increased with the upcoming date of July 1st. Hopefully, he will weed out the 'window lickers" such as yourself. Guess you are one of those who doesn't have the courage to support what YOU believe in. Although, two supervisors highly recommended me for a position as Lt, (actually based on my work performance and ethics) I was denied position because there wasn't enough "water under the bridge since the Tubbs incident." Thank you for asking. P.S. The department jumped to protect the Tubbs name ... then found out there is no/very distant relation to the prominent Tubbs. And the phone call to the news station .... LOL, even if I considered it, some other of your high-ranking-don't-get-me-in-trouble friends, beat me to the punch. One day, I may let you know who they are ... one day.

The act itself I was told was not on the tape but he recorded something on his vehicle's camera system. Robert Jones was Johnny Wyatt's right hand man. Robert was very honest and worked hard for everything. These are qualities that obviously don't sit well with the Bossier power bosses. 37. The powers that be in Bossier have ruined a lot of honest, decent people just for sport. I've seen good men turn from genius to someone not worthy of scrubing outhouse floors over night just because they angered one of the bosses or their toadies, and since one got angry they all have to get angry, stand in line, and each take their turns kicking the guy while he's down and laugh about it. They're evil and one day they'll pay. Maybe not in this life on earth but they'll be held accountable. There's no doubt there WERE unflattering words about the Bossier bosses on the tape that ONCE existed. But we'll never know it. RIP Robbert. 41. The Inquisitor and the Secret Expert Witness

OKAY, first let's assess the source of the claims and character of the secret anonymous source, Larry Scott to whom the alleged accusations are being based- OKAY, this expert witness, Larry Scott who was relieved of his duties or otherwise fired from the Bossier Parish DA's office, the Shreveport Police department, as well as the Bossier Police Department and yet most of the story content or origination of the story itself was based on his un-impeccable WORD that he actually heard Buddy Mondello's conversation with the fleeing from a crime sure don't have to talk to you now, Larry Thompson! OKAY, say this is true? What is this guy Buddy going to do or say? maybe "Well when they catch you, you just tell them that you know me and they will certainly let you go" and the DA and I will figure out a way to implicate ourselves starting with myself talking loud enough for this upstanding pillow of the community citizen, Larry Scott who just happens to be standing a foot away to hear our conversation! And as far as doing a favor for Pilkinton, the Attorney General's Office handled his case simply because the DA did know a friend of a friend's father-in-law and recused the department! The point of this response is of course to establish points of interest that were not included in the overall I did not get the auctioning business story that certainly bear witness as to the character and radical dialogue used to intimidate and embarrass previous and certainly target present Public Officials such as the DA!!!

The family is suffering and there is more to this situation than the allegations. Reading a head line does not tell the full story. The court knows the full story and why the accusations have been made. As time goes on the truth will come out and hopefully this family can heal. Scott may be many things but he is not a monster and loves his family. Another thing is the press knows nothing of who made the allegations and that has to be taken into serious consideration before he's condemned. However they are being very careful about discussing this story because the headlines aren't alway what they seem. Yes there has been an investigation but like I said the court knows what is really going on. In some cases like this the accused is truley innocent!
