Flag Etiquette

STANDARDS of RESPECT


The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

  • The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.

  • The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.

  • The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard

  • The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

  • The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.

  • The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Calvin Lester endorses Sarah Palin!

Well, he did. For First Quitter. On Twitter.

Before half of the Republicans in Bossier Parish have a heart attack, let me explain.

In the midst of an exchange about Palin's resignation, Councilman Lester posted:

  • CalvinBenLester - Found job she's qualified for: Sarah Palin as First Quitter! Quitter of the United States! QOTUS! She'll have my full support!

  • MyBossier@CalvinBenLester - "First Quitter" - I could make a great blog post 'Calvin Lester endorses Sarah Palin', would stir Bossier pols up!

On a more serious note, what do you make of Palin’s resignation after serving just part of her first term as governor? Some think it is so she can spend her time running for president. Others think she will mount a bid for the Senate.

Cynic that I am, I think there might be a scandal sitting there that is ready to explode.

It just doesn’t make sense. Palin has served just over 2 ½ years as governor. Her previous experience was as the head of a state commission and several years as mayor of a small town. To be a credible candidate for anything, she needs the launching board of her office.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin announced today that she is stepping down as Governor after less than three years of service.
She have no reason for her decision.

Stormy - Keep an eye on your Tweets!

Stormy Daniels will be in Shreveport Friday.

  • When: July 3, at 11:45am
    Where: Southfield Grill, 317 Southfield Road, Shreveport, La.

Pat Austin said on Twitter that she and her husband may go out there for the heck of it. Hope she does, and we will be watching And So it Goes in Shreveport Friday for updates.

Although she grew up in Louisiana, Stormy may want to quit emphasizing that she lives in Florida. After all, she is exploring a Louisiana seat. That is a Senate seat.

Hurricane Chris: Barbara Norton says Louisiana has 'always been a joke'

Rep. Barbara Norton of Shreveport, who introduced Hurricane Chris to the Louisiana Legislature to perform his now infamous rap song 'Halle Berry', says that the performance did not cause Louisiana to be a joke.
"Louisiana has always been a joke", says Rep. Norton in this interview.
Rep. Patrick Williams of Shreveport disagrees, saying that there is a time and place for everything, and this wasn't the time or the place.

Billy Mays cause of death - last Twitter post may be clue

Billy Mays last entry on Twitter was Saturday afternoon after landing in Tampa.
He tweeted from the plane:
Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air.

Afterwards, he told MyFox Tampa Bay that "All of a sudden, as we hit, you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping," MyFox Tampa Bay quoted him as saying. "It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."
His wife found him unreponsive this morning. An autopsy will be conducted on Monday.
