Duke Lowrie campaign up and running

Although he just made his formal announcement last night, Michael “Duke” Lowrie has been preparing his campaign for the District 8 House seat for some time. That seat is being left vacant by Jane Smith, who was term limited.
Lowrie was born, raised, and educated in Bossier Parish. He and his wife Kara are the owners of Acadiana Mortgage.
Duke is retired from the Bossier City Fire Department where he spent 20 years as a firefighter and paramedic. He has been active in various business and service organizations.

  3. Duke had nearly a hundred fifty people at his announcment even with the storm blowing in 30minutes before its start. There is no telling how many people would have come if the weather hadn't turned bad. Jeff is gonna have his hands full with this one.

  4. Jeff certainly may have his hands full. We don't need another lawyer in Baton Rouge. We need someone who has worked their way up and can relate to all people not just the good ole boy money people who think they control everything. It is time for a change.

  5. On a lighter note, Julian Whittington retired yesterday from the BSO.

  6. That was said to be a rumor, but turns out it is true. Wonder if he is contemplating a run against Larry or is that planned.

  10. Isn't it time for Jane Smith to crawl back under the rock she crawled from under.

  11. I think Duke is going to mop up. No offense to Jeff, but he just isn't a great campaigner. Duke is off and running.

  12. Julian Whittington run against his cousin... not a chance! Deen will pull out before Julian throws his hat in the ring. And,why would anyone in their right mind vote for Julian. A vote for him is a vote for Deen. I guess there is more than one way to keep the Sheriff's Department in the family. I guess this why Deen didn't said anything when McConnel came out.

  13. I hear Duke impressed a lot of folks with his announcement did anyone hear it?

  14. Whittington and Deen maybe kin.... But they don't see eye to eye.... Don't be surprised if it's cousin against cousin.... Go Julian!!!

  15. For years Whittington appeared to be the heir apparent, but I have heard he fell out of Deen's grace in the last few years. Does anyone know what happened, if this is true?

  16. Deen made Julian what he is today. He rose through the ranks because of his daddy and nothing more. If you think that Julian is going to do things different... think again. Deen will still control the Sheriff's department. Don't see eye-to-eye my butt!

  17. I don't see Deen supporting Whittington. There is no reason Whittington would have to resign or retire. Not being civil service, he could continue working while running for office, if Deen approved of his campaign. If Deen were going to retire, he could retire early and appoint Whittington sheriff so he could run as an incumbent.

  18. To anonymous asking whether anyone heard Duke's announcement, the answer is YES,over 150 at the Bossier Civic Center. I think he has got his message out loud and clear. His intentions have been known for quite some time. I think all will be surprised the votes he carries.

  19. Anyone is better than Jane. This seat has been a weakness for our area for years.

Either Duke or Jeff would do a great job. Jeff was president of the chamber and is as conservative as you can get. Duke is a retired firemen and owns a business with his wife.

This will be a good race and Bossier cannot lose in this one. I hope we have some debates as this will be an interesting factor. Both guys will raise money easlily and both know the issues.

Legal experience and chamber experience vs. Business owner/retired firemen.

May come down to the fact that districts with lawyers as their rep tend to do better during the session than districts with firemen/teachers/etc, do. It will be a race worth follwoing and will determine where this area is heading.

  20. BTW, historically lobbyist do not like attorneys who are representatives because the wool cannot be easily pulled over their eyes. Dukes union ties may hurt him, but he can't win without them. The firemen/teachers/workers unions are strong in this area and will not back a chamber guy like Jeff.

  21. Unions will be strong after Wisconsin hype. They will come at in force to make sure Louisiana does not change anything.

  22. Jeff wasnt the conservative in the congressional race and he is not now!

  23. Anon @ 11:10,

Unions may make a showing in Louisiana like they are in Wisconsin, but I think the difference will be Louisiana is a right to work state, and unions aren't that strong in the south. Because unions aren't strong in the south is one reason several companies like Toyota, Hyundai, and others have located in the south.
