The Life of Riley

The blog has been popping for the last couple of weeks, and right now I have 3 or 4 blog posts that I want to get up in the next couple of days. The election, Bryan Wooley, all of the School Board candidates interviews with The Shreveport-Bossier Tea Party, the Lt. Governor's race.
Sometimes, however, circumstances dictate what goes up here and something really important takes the forefront.
This time it's Riley.
Yep, our friend Riley has made the cover of Red River Moms.

Riley in her Easter Bonnet

Yes, her Mom has a blog, but I'm 'borrowing' this picture of Riley for My Bossier. Happy Easter, Riley! Who better to sing about that Easter Bonnet than Gene Austin, who grew up in Minden.

The Upside of Downs

A couple of my favorite people now have their own blog. I'm referring to Alena and Riley LaBorde.
I wrote about little Riley LaBorde here and here.
I'll let Alena explain in her own words:
"When my daughter was born(almost 4 years ago) she was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. After the shock wore off, I immersed myself in finding all the information I could on Downs. Books and the Internet provided a lot of valuable, scientific, clinical, and medical information. There was however, a lack of real world info. To help fill this void, I am BLOGGING. This will be a light hearted, irreverent, and true account of raising a child who is beautiful, smart, funny, sassy, sweet, loving, kind, and who happens to have Down Syndrome. I hope that this blog will bring smiles and laughter and show UPSIDE of DOWNS!"
Please check out the blog - I will link it in the sidebar.

Keeping up with Riley

We posted earlier this year about Riley LaBorde, a very sweet two year old who has Down Syndrome. Riley is the daughter of Alena and Gerard LaBorde. Alena sent some new pictures and a message that we would like to share.
Please check out Riley's website for this year's buddy walk. We are raising money and awareness for children with Down Syndrome. Please take a minute to visit her site and pass it on to all your friends.
Thanks, Alena

The Redemption of Ignorance

As kids, we were aware that my first cousin's son was different. We were generally 'shooed' away from him, although I can remember him smiling at us.
I don't believe that I ever spoke to him. He stayed at home with his mother, and never attended school. How lonely he must have been. This sounds so cruel (and was), but it wasn't considered so at the time; no one was intentionally cruel to him, no one made fun of him. Due to our ignorance (and that of our society), he was quite totally ignored.
Although Down syndrome was first described in 1866, the disorder wasn't identified as a chromosome 21 trisomy until 1959, when I was 12 years old. Simply put, this means that people with Downs have at least a part of a 21st chromosome.
Individuals with Down syndrome tend to have a lower than average cognitive ability, often ranging from mild to moderate learning disabilities.
Although I learned about Downs over the years, it was purely intellectual knowledge. It took a child to educate me. It took a child to make me, half a century later, cry for my cousin; not for his condition, but for our ignorance and inattention and for his exclusion.

Meet Riley LaBorde, the daughter of Alena & Gerard LaBorde. Riley is a precious little girl, and has a wonderful mom and dad. Here are a couple of Riley's Easter photos.
