Judge's Post and Comments

I don't know why, but some comments are not showing on the post regarding the judge's race. There are over 200 comments, I honestly don't know if the number of comments affects it or not.
Let's use this post to continue discussion on the judge's race or anything else you feel inclined to discuss.

  1. Even your blog is tired of hearing about it. Lol

  2. Nerren raised three times more money than the others. Slattery raised 51k, Graves 59k and Nerren 160k. That speaks volumes about who has the most support. Typically, the candidate who can raise money and doesn't have to fund a campaign himself has the most support and wins.

  3. Typically, the guy who is supported by 'The Boys' raises the most money. Problem is, they only have one vote each.

  4. Does anybody know if Cedric Glover has gained any more weight while hospitalized?

Well...you said, "anything else you feel inclined to discuss."

  5. Well, I was amused in reading the Slattery ad in "The Minden Press-Herald" this weekend. He claims to be the only candidate from Webster Parish, so I guess he somehow forgot that he is from Shreveport. Maybe that Slattery building next to the Caddo Parish Courthouse will give him a hint. Funny that the Webster Parish boy he boasts of being does not boast about the high school he graduated from.

    1. He's not from Webster anyway. Grew up in Houston. Went to college in Houston. Moved to Shreveoort when he got outta law school and been there ever since. Check the mortgage records in Caddo.

  6. I've noticed that about the good old Webster Boys. If you have only lived there for 30 years you can't say it's your home.
Have to be born to it.

  10. I read with interest the Times article about the money raised in the Judge's race. That led me to the reports that each candidate filed regarding the money each had raised. Mr. Nerren has far more individual contributors than the other two candidates. I know that many people do not contribute to political campaigns but when one candidate is able to raise 3x more than the others, he is probably the winner. And, considering that most people want to be with the winner, the support follows the money.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah, you would think that you'd want to stick with a winner just because he raised more money... until I heard stories about how big backers will carry cash into an individual and lay a couple thousand down and ask that other person to now write the candidate a check??? I have realized these things still happen and I tend to study up on the person instead of who has more signs or who has more money to spend.

  12. Jim, four years ago you quoted Judge Bruce Bolin in his response to the Times request for comments on the Judge Mike Craig race when Craig was backed by DA Schuyler Marvin. That quote said, "It's not fair, whereas I felt the district attorney was allowed to be wide open and support people, spend money, influence, we can do nothing. I really am kind of afraid to say anything to you--it's that bad--other than say we're very disappointed (on the way Marvin's office contributed to the race)." Is history about to repeat itself? My viewing of this blog tells me that the majority of bloggers are not pleased with Marvin but then turn right around and strongly support Marvin's hand picked candidate coming from his office. I've read many comments about Lo Walker and Jimmy Hall that were not complimentary at all and Mike Nerren openly boasts that Lo Walker is endorsing him but no comments on that either. The Good Ole Boy system is alive and well and the fact that the same names of big contributors to Marvin and Craig are now on Nerren's list leads no where else but to that conclusion. And then the issue of the tail wagging the dog. Webster Parish is just barely over 1/4 of the population of the district but our DA and three judges are from there (if you include Bolin whose place is up for grabs in this election). If Slattery is elected it will go right back into that situation. My vote is for Graves. He's put more of his own money into this campaign and owes the least to big contributors and none to the Good Ole Boys.

  13. great spin anon 1:05. Few points to make:
Quote a sitting judge about an election where there is a challenge to another sitting judge. Hmm, I wonder what anyone in that position would say.
I love how the good ole boys are defined here: anyone who isnt me. Is a 20 year sitting judge a good ole boy- who does he have to please to keep his seat? Was a 20 year asst. DA a good ole boy to his boss's political machine? Is a current asst. DA a good ole boy to his boss? When Marvin ran, didnt the old DA's men (including Whit Graves) come out against him - werent they the good ole boys who didnt want to lose their positions, influence? The whole tired "good ole boys" routine is a silly premise. Everyone running is a "good ole boy" (for whatever that silly term is worth) otherwise they would have no chance of getting elected.
Also, no sitting official is going to endorse someone who might later make their endorsement look bad. So an endorsement by any sitting official should be considered a vote of confidence. Of course opinions about the endorser might help or hurt.
Do you really think that some of the candidates are turning away contributors because they want to not owe anything to the big contributors? nonsense; eveeryone one of them has held fundraisers- some just aren't as well attended which is a refelction on support in the community. If there is huge support by non-big contributors, where are the huge number of $25, $50 donations from Joe Everyman? Fact is this blog, like most internet blogs is a forum for people to complain. What good news is written about by something done by an official in Bossier? Dirty Laundry generates alot more traffic. Not an indictment of this site, just a reflection on the net, in general- you cant judge people's satisfaction about their elected officials by internet talk-- that talk (anywhere) doesnt focus on that.
As for someone putting up more of their money...do you not think they wont have a "retire the debt" event later. Will those contributors who are then giving money to a sitting judge not expect something? (I hope not, but by your argument they would). Or is that not right, because their may be an implication that if you dont contribute others may get better treatment.
I feel like "the no spin zone".

  14. Nobody gives away money! They are investing in goodwill at the very least, or more likely trying to buy influence and preferential judicial consideration. Of course, I am cynical after watching human behavior for the past six decades.

    1. All 3 candidates in this and all races solicit, hold fundraisers for and accept campaign donations. Some get more than others but not one has turned down money!!! Don't be mad because you raised less than others or had to use your own money because you couldn't raise enough.

  15. Just saw billboards where Nerren racked up endorsements from Mayor Lo Walker, DA Schuyler Marvin, Sheriff Gary Sexton, Bossier City Marshal Lynn Austin, former state Repr Billy Montgomery, Bossier School Board member Mike Mosura and the Bossier Firefighters Union!!!!

  16. Why don't they just put a mannequin with a robotic rubberstamp on the bench? No sense in paying that big salary to someone who is just going to be Marvin's puppet on a string.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i guess there is a lot of truth that the candidate with the most contributions wins. Im sure the best candidate gets the most money a good deal of the time, other times the rich are just buying the elections-hard to know how those percentages play out and what is true in this case

  18. So sick of seeing these post that are soooooo far from the truth!!!!! I can not wait until this judge rase is over!!!!!!! I know Mike nerren and he is a good honest man that comes from a good family and I feel he has the support because they feel hes the best man for the job!!!!!! Not because hes going to be a puppet on a string!!!!!!! I also feel that its so easy to try and belittle someone else to make your own light shine!!!! Trust me Mike Nerren will make a great Judge and those who REALLY know Mike know this that is why he has the support he has!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure by now everyone has made up their mind so your continued effort to lie amd make up things are getting old!!!!!

  19. well many of us REALLY KNOW Marvin, his track record has been VERY public, and when Marvin "endorses" Nerrin it speaks volumes, no further commentary is needed

a marshmellow in a cow terd or lip stick on a pig doesnt make Nerrin sound more appealing

  22. "Let me guess. You're guy didn't get any endorsements? Wonder why????"

Because he is not a part of the Boss Marvin political machine, and will be an independent judge, if elected.

  23. I wonder if Marvin endorsed one of the other candidates would they have turned him down?

    1. Marvin just one of many endorsements. Don't forget Mayor Lo Walker, Webster Sheriff Gary Sexton, former State Repr Billy Montgomery, Bossier City Marshal Lynn Austin and Bossier Parish School Board member Mike Mosura!!! None of which are part of any political machine but each of whom is independent of each other and all endorse MIKE NERREN!! Any candidate would welcome that group but only one got them!!!

  27. The article in the Bossier Press was very interesting. I personally do not give to political campaigns unless I know the candidate well. I think that is how most people feel also. Mr. Nerren must know a lot of people to have gotten that many people to contribute to his campaign. I do recognize a lot of the names on his list. I didn't count all of them but Mr Nerren had at least three or four times as many contributors as the others

  35. The same folks have selected these elected officials. Those folks are called "voters."

    ReplyDelete
  36. Good article on KTBS.com about ethics problem with Nerren being endorsed by the sitting DA. Of course, he already has one hand-picked judge in his pocket, so if you are accused of a crime in Bossier or Webster, you can forget about getting a fair trial.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ok Nerren endorsed by Lo Walker who was elected with 90 .1% of the vote and Sheriff Sexton who was re-elected with 90% of the vote and Marvin who was re-elected without opposition. The only person who would claim their endorsement is unethical is someone who didn't get it. It's rather Orwellian that the only candidate to ever be suspended from the practice of law would claim his opponent is unethical.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I was unaware that all votes by the citizens of Bossier and Webster Parishes were thrown away except for Schuler Marvin's vote. If Mr. Nerren is voted as our next judge it's what the citizens want and not one man.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 4:26,

The angry ones on this blog pick the losers every time and there is always a conspiracy. They fail to see that a majority of the citizens are not like them. Nerren, Graves, Slattery. Nerren by a largin margin in the runoff.

  40. May the best man win---Whit Graves!

  41. No lawyer suspended from practicing law - a la Whit Graves - has ever been elected Judge - nor should he be. Vote for Integrity - Mike Nerren!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sorry, Graves changing things. Nerren, Slattery, Graves. Nerren in the runoff by 14%. Graves self funds third loss.

  43. Why should anyone care about your unscientific guessing, 6:47 & 7:20. They are doing a poll today.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Read it again after the vote and see who's guessing.

  45. Graves suspension from practicing law is a dealbreaker for me. I am no lawyer fan and realize that to be a judge you must be a lawyer, but if you get suspended I could never vote for that kind of person. I mean, I am sure there must have been prior violations before they suspend you from pracitcing law. That seems drastic!

  46. CAN WE GIVE NERREN SOME LOVE.ENDORSED BY MY BOSSIER WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD.I'm thinking 60/40 Nerrens way.

    ReplyDelete
  47. There is way too big of a gap for Graves to cover. This is going to be a waste of money and political muscle.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree. i do not expect Graves to stay in this. The numbers don't lie. Isn't there a time frame in which he can withdraw? How long is it?

    ReplyDelete
  49. You are dreaming--in Technicolor! Sixty percent of the electorate has already voted against Marvin's boy, Nerren. This is a Long/Anti-Long type of election, with Marvin being the current Kingfish, wannabe dictator. Graves will get most of the Slattery voters.
