Three more days

Three more days until the election. Turnout is expected to be low, that's the problem with runoff elections. But then again, only the people who care are voting, and that's not a bad thing.
It has been an interesting election cycle. My Bossier has had some record numbers. I've had several blog posts about the election, including a couple early on when it was just beginning to develop.
The blog posts about the race for Judge have had more than 26,000 views and as of right now 1,545 comments.
I am encountering a problem; when the comment count reaches 200 comments don't always post. Apparently it is a problem with Google Blogger, which is the platform that I use. In ordinary circumstances, that is not a problem, because very few blog posts have that many comments.
A lot of money has been spent by the candidates. I haven't done anything in depth, but it appears that the total raised, borrowed and spent by all three candidates is between $400,000 and $500,000.
That's a lot of money for a local Judge's race.
Use this blog post to comment any general thoughts you have about the election, and to support your candidate.
It would really be nice if we could get some positives in here - rather than just running down the other guy, tell us what is good and positive about your candidate.

  2. That sucks...200 comments, and it's over!

I tried to post a comment (a LOL at Jim's astute observation about my "bitchin'" comment).

    And, it didn't post.

    That sucks.

    Just sayin'...

  3. See ya at the victory party. Nerren 53 %.

  4. An upset special and I got it on some pretty special information: Graves-52 Nerren-48. Reason makes sense but I ain't going to Vegas just yet.

  5. Old boys at the coffee bar said if it boils down to pro-Marvin vs anti-Marvin then Nerren dead pidgin. If it a popularity contest Graves is grave yard dead. If it just straight up it 50/50. The republican endorsement counts for some. The lying charge counts and the association with Barry the prez counts too. 4 of them say Nerren and 3 said Graves and I said I didn't care. But that not true cuz I already voted..hehehe.

  6. We will know Saturday, agree with the above points, nerren likely has the edge going in with such a big margin in primary.

  7. I think Whit will win! He is a wonderful and genuine man! He has known me since I was a baby (32 yrs). I can go on and on about how great he is, but just to say the most important to me is,when my son was born breeched and Doctors were worried about his hip so we had to see an Orthopedic Specialist. When Whit heard about it, he called with his concerns and told me about Shriner's!
I know that he is dedicated to acheive his ambitions in life. I have seen him accomplish many, and I truly admire and respect him for that! He has put a lot of work into this campaign. With him being a Christian man, more experience, and independent - I only see him as the best qualified for this position!:)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Whit Graves is a successful person with vast experience and voted the best by his peers. But best of all he is independent and will not take us down the tube(pun intended). Go Whit Go!!!!!We love you!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Both men are good lawyers. Party shenanigans changed a lot of mindsfrom whit to Nerren. Either will make good judge. Nerren advantage because won primary and defended himself well against political attacks. Nerren secured donations and important support early. But all in all this race would have had the exact same result with none of the negativity.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Nerren defended himself well? Against what?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Mike Nerren grew up in Haughton and has served our district well. Conservatives are behind him from both parties. He will carry on the tradition we have in Bossier-Webster of good lawyers making great judges.
Whit has said he will be different than the judges we now have. I don't think anyone is upset with the panel of judges we now have-- if you have any doubt, compare our judges to any other district in state .

    ReplyDelete
  12. I have had the opportunity to know both candidates. They are both good lawyers. Nerren is independent seeking support from all walks of life, and whit has also. Both have laid out a plan and at this point all we need to know , we know. Good luck to both.

  13. I feel Mike Nerren will make a great Judge for he has proven his Merits over and over. Nerren is Honest,Fair and will make Firm but Fair decision and Nerren is a christian family man and a great father. He has helped so many over the years and changed many lives. I know Nerren to stand for what is right with no outside influences. I have seen and heard all the many attacks on Nerren and his supporters and his own family but Nerren handled all the Negative attacks well and continued to just states facts and never allowed the untrue attacks to take him away from what is important and thats being who he really is and proving he will make a great Judge not by what others just say but by his proven record and merits!! We all Love you Mike and Good Luck!!! GOD SPEED!!!!

  14. I think Whit is the bigger Liar based on 01-b-0922,the Supreme Court said so.And how is stating a fact BITCHING...Nerren is a honest and good man.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have known Whit for 15 years, and I trust him to make intelligent/logical decisions within the law, independent of the DA's office. Although I believe Nerren is a genuine/competent person on most accounts, the big money players in this race have too much at stake, and politically it's hard to imagine this not influencing Nerren and his decisions in the court room. I wish both candidates the best either way.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tim I think being honest is the biggest factor in this race. How can we ignore the supreme courts findings on Mr.Graves.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Fact,Whit got turned down from most of these BIG money players when this race got started. So dont Talk about BIG money players.

    ReplyDelete
  18. FACT...Marvin raised money for Nerren...his interest is carrying out his own agenda, which everyone knows what that is. The tribe will speak Saturday night junior.

  19. The people who knew the candidates made a choice to support Nerren. He secured endorsements and contributions of local leaders who knew all candidates and he secured the most votes in the primary. He should win this despite the onslaught of negative, desperate tactics by Graves. But, having been involved in 2 prior Graves losses for Judge, no one is surprised at Graves' dirty tactics.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nerren has a clean record as a lawyer and has represented all types of people in all types of cases. Graves was suspended for lying as a lawyer and only represents drunk drivers. This is a no brainer. Why didn't Nerren's team get this type comparison out there?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 8:34, you're kidding, right? Nerren's entire campaign strategy has been attacking Graves.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Proof in the pudding. The Republican Party endorsed Whit Graves for a reason. It is rare for a Republican to get an endorsement over another Republican but it was done because Graves way stronger!

  23. Nerren ran negative telephone campaign against Slattery and his supporters were not happy about that during primary. Those unhappy Slattery people ain't voting for Nerren!

    1. The problem is that Marvin has people working all over Webster in order to secure a Nerren Webster win. Also, North Webster has sour grapes for Whit since he ran against Robinson and Slattery. People in these areas are not informed about the workings behind Nerren and most have not witnessed the video. If I were Whit I would spend every moment in Webster and kiss every baby. However, time has almost run out and Webster will be Whits demise in the same way Bossier was Slattery's demise. Nerren wins and Marvin has his second judge

  27. 9:55 I wouldn't have a problem with Nerren bringing it out either if he would tell the truth about it. The report doesn't have the word "Lie" anywhere in it. Graves got a "Fully deferred" suspension meaning he was never suspended and that was for not turning the brief in timely and that happened over ten years ago. That's the dirty politics Nerren is guilty of and has been doing throughout this campaign. I don't have a problem with Graves bringing out the unethical printing of the sample ballot that happened now. If General Cole's statement is proven, Nerren may be in a lot of trouble from the ethics board.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lets get it Whits Supreme Court suspension straight. First, he was held in contempt for failure to file a brief timely. Then, that contempt violation was referred by the Court to the Office of Disciplinary Counsel (ODC) who then recommended a nine month suspension, deferred, and two years active probation. The Supreme Court again got the case, FOR THE SECOND TIME, and adopted the recommendation of the ODC. They recognized in that opinion -their second time dealing with Graves - that he "misled the Court". That's lying anyway you slice it. And those facts are 100% accurate.

  29. After all information that has come out, I feel dumb for ever considering these two candidates. Bring back that Slattery guy!

  46. I want to clear up some things that are coming from king sling himself and supporters. Nerren nor his supporters have ever bashed Judge Slattery nor his supporters or family.GRAVES and His SUPPORTERS have been the ones that started all the Negative campaigning not Nerren. Graves started with the Negative attacks not just on my Bossier but outside this blog. I am so sick of Graves acting as if he is such a victum when in all reality Graves paved this path for all the Negative attacks. Graves wants people to believe that he is honest, and has intergrity and has not been slinging mud when GRAVES threw the first punch!!!!!! Ater many, many attacks on Nerren and his supporters and their familes and even Nerren's family then the facts were maild out about Graves. Nerren's mail out has stated FACTS!!!!! WITH A CASE NUMBER FOR ANYONE TO LOOK UP THE facts!!! GRAVES lIED AND THAT IS A fact!!!!! (MISLEAD) nice word for lying!!!! Nerren has had one commercial and mailout on the issue and yet GRAVES has had 2 you tube videos 3 or more mail outs on top of his commercials attacking Nerren I am so sick of all the poor Whit and im not going to go NEGATIVE CRAP!!! The declined endorsements that he went to some of Nerrens supporters to ask for support that he claims he declined. The mail out that came in the mail today just more lies. It has been a attack everyday with the Graves camp and just NEGATIVE!!! Graves has ran 3 other times and was just as negative when he ran the last 3 times. Step up and be accountable for your actions and STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE FOR YOUR ACTIONS.

  56. "Bad Company Ruins Good Morals"

If this biblical quote is true, how are we to take Nerren's association with Julian Darby, who we all know has been accused of threatening other candidates and illegally producing Obama/Nerren flyers under Nerren's control, has been exposed by General Cole for unethical and illegal campaign practices?... Nerren's role in the DA's office (over the Juvenile Division-a KEY role) that is under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, his large campaign contributors that have multiple FELONY cases that were mysteriously nol-prosse by his office, misleading/defaming advertising that claims on tv that Graves was suspended from practicing law when in fact he has never been suspended from practicing law... a total misrepresentation of the facts, and as Darlene would say, A LIE....the endorsement by the Republican Party of Louisiana which Nerren and some of the local PEC scrutinized simply because it was not in his favor, when we all know it was due to him putting himself on a ticket with Obama which he later claimed he knew nothing about (really???)...the list goes on and on, and this all took place during the election!!!

This guy Nerren cannot be trusted to run a fair and impartial courtroom if he cannot even run a clean campaign. And if all that was not enough, he is in bed with Schuylar Marvin who is personally endorsing him, financing him, campaigning for him, raising money for him.

This would be like you entering a beauty contest with the judges only being judges because the "wanna be beauty queen" picked her uncle and father as the judges. Who you think is gonna win the beauty contest/or the trial? Who do you think is gonna lose? Schuylar will win, and I assure you the loser will never be the fat cat supporters of Nerren.

If there were ever a situation where you could claim something is "Rigged"...this would be IT.

PS---Having been on this blog a long time, I have never seen a group like Nerren's before. I am sure there are some good people that are uninformed about Nerren, but the lack of respect, even for a highly decorated General of our military, the vomiting of hearsay and rhetoric totally unfounded in a shred of truth, and the blatant attacks on Mr Graves who has been a true American Hero, absolutely shocks the conscious.

  66. I am fairly new here and do not have a year to review the numerous posts but have a few observations.
    (1) Mr Graves recent mailing says he only accepted "contributions from fine, upstanding citizens" - I take that to mean that he thinks that his opponents contributors are trash. I do not give to political races but will do so now.
    (2) Mr. Graves says that he "declined endorsements from other politicians believing that people should choose" - Two things about this quote-- (a) aren't those politicians people? do they not have a right to speak their minds? Last time I checked , the constitution gave us rights of free speech. Maybe Mr. Graves should read the republican pledge. I, respect some of our elected officials very much and am offended that he thinks I should not have the right to have input from anyone else. (b) exactly who did Mr. Graves "decline an endorsement from?" At some point I am told he "claimed" to have an endorsement from our party (which he bragged about) but could produce no written proof of that ficticious endorsement. If endorsements are so bad, why did he seek them and if he "declined endorsements," please tell me who they were and specifically why he declined them. Surely, there must be some worthy person willing to endorse him that had some respect in the community. Love to hear from Mr. Graves on this.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Graves will explain that for you just as soon as Nerrin can explain how its possible that all those big donors have had all those charges nol prossed. 68. I think it is sad that retired 1 star Gen Cole violated 4 Star General Dempsey's (Chairman of the Joint Chief's of Staff) request to stay of politics. Gen Dempsey even sent every retired Gen a letter asking them to stay out of politics. When 1 star generals don't follow orders...I guess they are sent to the house. Gen Dempsey has said repeatedly comments like:
"One of the things that marks us as a profession in a democracy is it's most important we remain apolitical," Gen Dempsey has said numerous times, "That's how we maintain our trust with the American people. The American people don't want us to become another special interest group. In fact, I think that confuses them."

It is just sad to see retired military officers not respect the highest ranking member of the military especially when their actions further divide the country and erode the trust of the American people just like Brig Gen Cole has done. When that happens send them to the house...just like what happened to Gen McCrystal and Gen McArthur (who were both 4 stars). We don't need our military (retired or active) confusing and dividing the American people.

  69. Good point, I googled it and found:
“If someone uses the uniform, whatever uniform, for partisan politics, I am disappointed because I think it does erode that bond of trust we have with the American people,” Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey said in an interview with Fox News while flying back from a trip to Afghanistan and Iraq…

“Is their criticism valid? I won’t comment on that,” Dempsey said onboard a C17 military aircraft en route back from the Middle East. “Is it useful? No, it’s not useful. It’s not useful to me.”

Dempsey said as the steward of his profession — the military — he thinks it imperative that the military remain “apolitical.”

The actions by retired Brig Gen Cole highlights the problem the top military officer in the nation is upset about when a "retired" Brig Gen sends a letter to a political blog just days before an election, undoubtedly trying to influence it. Our nation is in a crisis right now because Rep & Dem alike can't find common ground to deal with the debt and other pressing issues. Partisan politics must end if we are going to correct the major problems with our nation.

So here again are the FACTS. Just because Gen. Dempsey's OPINION is that they should not take a political stance. He may have a valid point for those in active duty, but for those in retirement or in-active duty? There is that whole "freedom of speech" thing that those same soldiers put their lives on the line for.

Associating Dempsey's opinion about the SEAL operatives' PAC with Gen. Cole's opinion in a local/district judicial race = EPIC FAIL.

Lo Walker would NEVER do that because he is a man of honor.

  89. at 10:21-- I am sure that everyone means that the way a general should involve himself in a race should not in any way appear to be improper. Filing a ethics complaint against your candidates opponent five days before an election as a PRESS RELEASE is not fair. If General was mad about the suspension issue revealed about GRAVES, he should have commented on that issue-- the ethics complaint is a red herring to mislead voters are the last minute. That's why both sides are scratching their head on this one.

If he was mad about the black community leaders endorsing NERREN then he should have sent his letter a month ago and he'd have an answer by now. then he could publish that.

  90. Lets make something CRYSTAL clear about the endorsement of the state party--other than ANN PRICE and JOHN KAY-- not one member can even tell me WHO WHIT graves is. In fact when they find out about all the mess surrounding WHIT and realize then were not told the whole truth, they start to wonder is KAY has a conflict of interest because he was running a campaign for whit, getting paid as a consultant, was a voting member of the SCC and activiely sought the endorsement of hte SCC for his candidate, then most likely got a bonus from his candidate for secruing an endorsement.
Anyone who researches that and understands that KAY used his position on the SCC to mis lead that group on the flyer issue AND that that misleading resulted in the endorsment of the PARTY-- is pretty clear that WHITS background was not examined by the party when making the endorsement-- local voters have examined his background more than the party did.
This activity may result in VILLERE's resignation as leader of the party.

  92. I heard the state republican party is considering co-endorsing NERREN this week-- that would be great! they are finally getting to the bottom of this!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Every elected republican leader in town should call the state party and ask how they got invovled in a local race-- I bet that 142 or the 144 members of the State Central Committee cannot tell you a thing about Whit Graves-- I wonder if they know that they endorsed him without a hearing? Many are wondering how Nerren was not co endorsed-- hopefully they will release a written co -endorsment this week.

    ReplyDelete
  94. whit was not endorsed, no one has produced a written endorsement-- no one has seen the endorsement-- what a shame to the party--

    ReplyDelete
  95. Even if whit wins this, he loses.

  96. Nerren broke state and maybe federal law with his dealings with UID and Julian Darby. He broke the faith with the Republican party. That is why Graves got the endorsement and that is why the General wrote him up. That is a fact, not a lie.

  99. OMG!!! I just got home from an evening meeting and watched the news I had recorded. An interview with Graves and Nerren. Nerren was bragging about and giggling about winning a trial against Graves years ago. I'm familiar with the trial because I've been doing some research on the point that came out in the trial, whether the statement of a person who is unavailable to testify can be introduced and not be hearsay. Nerren's case he is giggling about is State v. Broderick Collins Bossier Parish NO. 75,742; two counts of armed robbery and two counts of 2nd degree kidnapping. Nerren lost the jury trial but won it on appeal arguing that just because a person is unavailable doesn't allow their statement identifying the defendant to be presented to the jury. Who was unavailable at the trial? A young girl named Zelwannica Coleman. Why was she unavailable? SHE WAS BRUTALLY BEATEN TO DEATH AND GUESS WHO THE MAIN SUSPECT WAS!!!! AND MIKE NERREN IS GIGGLING ABOUT THAT!!!! A decent man would never have bragged about winning a case that way but then it appears that Nerren doesn't have anything else to brag about. Is this the only jury trial Nerren has every won?

    ReplyDelete
  101. That doesn't surprise me at all about Nerren. Nerren likes to play off the image of Mr baseball coach, mr nice guy, but as we have seen by his campaign tactics, he lies like a snake. I go to Airline Baptist and and most of us know what he is really like.

  107. So whit will not allow any case to be dismissed. That seems fair and non prejudicial.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I have read the suspension papers and received Mr. Graves and Mr. Nerrens mail pieces. I think Mr. Graves should admit to the suspension issue and explain that it was deferred. I looked up that word and it means held in abeyance , whatever that means. but the supreme court decision clearly says he was suspended so he ought to respond to it in an honest way

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He has responded. His campaign secured the endorsement of the party and accused Nerren of giving money to Obama with a ethics letter press release from a biased general.
He cannot overcome that with truth, so he's forcing Nerren to disprove a lie. Obama did the same thing to Romney.

      Delete
    2. Allow me to explain what a fully deferred suspension means: Graves failed to file a memorandum. The "base line" penalty for that is a suspension of your law license for a year. The Office of Disciplinary Counsel noted mitigating factors in the case, good reasons, for not filing on time. Graves offered (Consent decree) a 9 month fully deferred suspension with a two year period of probation which required him to report to another attorney who would make sure that Graves was filing his memorandums on time. The ODC agreed with that and the Supreme Court ratified it. The same as if someone committed an offense that required a 5 year sentence in prison but the judge feels that mitigating factors apply. He suspends or defers the sentence and places the person on probation. As long as the person does not violate his probation conditions he doesn't go to jail. As long as Graves did not file a memorandum late during the two years he was being monitored, he did not lose his license for 9 months. Graves complied with the condition for 2 years and therefore never lost his ability to practice law by losing his license. If the guy who had a 5 years prison sentence completes his probation with making another mistake, he never goes to jail. No further violations means the sentence is not imposed. Bottom line GRAVES NEVER WAS SUSPENDED!!!!! Nerren said he was in his TV commericial, that was a LIE!!!! That's why you don't see that commercial anymore. To tell a bald face lie like that on a commercial in a political race is a felony offense. But Nerren did play it on TV for two days and he can't have a do over. I'd bet the farm that Graves will file a formal complaint after the election. If he filed it now, the law prohibits him for saying anything about it other than he filed the complaint. Nerren may, and I emphasize MAY, win the election but if the ethics board hears the transcript of Nerren, he could face being disbarred.

      Delete
  109. The Supreme Court Case clearly said it was a defered suspension. Graves has a commercial that says he has been "continuously in good standing". How is that not enough? Get something new and then think about it, then post it so you can have an actual argument.

  111. Big article in The Inquisitor this week about Mike Nerren ethical violations and the FBI investigating his office. We need to put a stop to the corruption in our parishes once and for all and put Whit Graves in as our trusted Judge...a man dedicated to law enforcement, INDEPENDENT of the DA's office, NOT GREASED by local big shot campaign contributors--a MAN for the people of our parish!

    ReplyDelete
  112. NOT!!! In this life time!!! Whit would not know integrity if it slapped him in the face.

  113. Darlene, You have vomited out countless accusations as a former disgruntled employee of the da's office, none of which have a shred of basis in fact. I think I will take a highly decorated General's word (over yours) for violations in political ethics, relationships with known liberal operatives like Darby, and other political shenanigans.

The people of Bossier/Webster Parishes are tired of the BS and would like to put in a man that represents the citizens of our Parish, not some guy endorsed and financed by an office under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

We are also tired of the major Campaign Boosters trying to BUY elections for their own self-interests.

Whit Graves is the man for this office.

  123. Good morning boys and girls. It's time to vote. But before you push a button I want you to remember someone who is not so distant a memory--Chubby Knight. A man I knew since elementary school who came back to his home after a career with Delta Airlines and wanted to make a difference. Once elected he started learning about some things he thought were unethical and started asking questions, questions that were hard for some to answer if they offered an answer at all. Why some property owners had water and sewer service along with streets provided to their land which then increased in value by literally 30 and 40 fold while others could not even get a curb cut to their businesses? A great sigh of relief came over the power brokers when Chubby made a mistake and tried to cash a questionable check and the deal was cut, resign your elected position, quit asking questions, and you will not be prosecuted. He tried and I believe he died because he challenged the power brokers. Whit Graves has done the same this year with one big difference, he has not stumbled. Win or lose tomorrow, he is a winner and so are we the public. Some pretty nasty and rotten dealings have been uncovered and brought to light. I can only pray that this is the beginning of a new and better path for my home town, a path where people who use their power for their own benefit and for the benefit of their friends excluding others just as, if not more deserving will either change or be voted out of office. When I go into the booth tomorrow I'm going to push the button twice. Once for Whit and once for Chubby. God bless you both for your courage to stand up for the rest of us.
