Adley Tips the Scales: State Senate Passes Pay Raise by One Vote

Just one vote. That's all it took to double salaries for Louisiana lawmakers as the measure cleared its final legislative hurdle Monday. The Senate voted 20-18 to go along with the same version approved by the House on Friday. It now goes to the governor’s desk. Under the bill, the base pay for state legislators rises to $37,500 -- an increase of $20,700 -- and the pay package totals nearly $60,000 per year for rank-and-file lawmakers. Gov. Bobby Jindal has criticized the measure but said he will not veto it. The pay raise will take effect on July 1.
