Julian Whittington, former Chief Criminal Deputy with the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Department, resigned last month. Speculation was rampant that he would run for sheriff against incumbent Larry Deen.
Former Deputy Sheriff Mike McConnell has already thrown his hat into the ring.
We have been able to confirm from a couple of very reliable sources that Whittington is going to run.
Deju Vu all over again?
The question that is being asked is whether or not a former deputy can unseat a powerful sitting sheriff.
Ask Larry Deen.
In 1987 he took 62% of the vote against his former boss, Vol Dooley.
In addition, I hear that Whittington has some very influential support lining up in his corner.
Don't misunderstand, Larry Deen still has a lot of very solid support, but he is not invincible.
This promises to be a very interesting election year.

ReplyDeleteThis will be a good race. New Bossier Police Chief, New Bossier Fire Chief, New Bossier Representative, New Bossier City Marshall, and a New Sheriff.
ReplyDeleteLarry Deen miscalculated in promoting Dempsey over Julian. The talk has been that Deen would pull out of the race to support Dempsey. Not knocking Dempsey, he's a good man, but that would not or will not work.

Does anyone know why Whittington fell out of Deen's grace? For years he appeared to be the heir apparent and then all of the sudden was seemingly demoted from chief deputy to assist. chief.

ReplyDeleteI'm still wondering how Dempsey started 6 or 7 years ago as a new employee, was promoted and promoted through every rank ending up as Undersheriff (which we don't even need).
ReplyDeleteDeen will not be able to answer the tax increase issue.
ReplyDeleteDeen will suffer from the whole Dempsey promotion saga as well. He will have a difficult time trying to explain to folks how such an in-experienced officer gets promoted so quickly. There has to be many other more qualified, more experienced, and more capable of being the number two person in the department besides a former tractor salesman.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of whittington. When the D.A.R.E. program started in Bossier Parish, If I'm not mistaken he was one of the first DARE officers.

For the record, I believe that Deen, Whittington and McConnell are all competent. Doyle Dempsey is not a candidate but from what I can tell he is very competent.
ReplyDeleteThis race won't come down to competence, it will come down to decision making and accessability.
Deen has been known to cover things up in his Dept. His officers have made huge errors in judgement and he swept it all under the rug. It's time for him to go.

ReplyDeleteMan aint that the truth. There was a deputy who arrested a store owner for "battery" for trying to stop a shoplifter in his own store when the shoplifter tried to fight. And to make matters worse, the deputies sergeant told him to do it. What the hell is that all about. A man can't protect his own property in Bossier parish?
So how serious is Whittington?
