One last post on the Judge's Race

The race for 26th JDC District Judge is over, and the people have chosen Mike Craig to serve.

Dewey Burchett has served the people well for 20 years, and I regret that it ended in this way. Craig's tactic of portraying Judge Burchett as easy on sex offenders apparently worked. I found it interesting that the people of Webster Parish, where this case was tried, did not buy the hype; they voted for Judge Burchett.

Everyone involved knew that DA Schuyler Marvin was behind Craig's run. I also find it interesting that his home parish of Webster did not support him in this.

There is an old saying that goes something like "All change is not good, and all progress is not forward." We will see if that applies in this case.

Mike Craig won; I do not like the way that he did it.

To borrow the words of Forrest Gump, that is all that I have to say about that.

  1. Jim, I'm confused. Dewey's actual rulings and legal temperament are not fair game? I know you like Dewey and and that's fine, but don't pretend like Mike did anything slimy.

There was some slime in this campaign, but it wasn't from Mike . . . .

It was time for Dewey to go. I can tell you from firsthand experience that his attitude was poor and his ego out of control.

  2. At this point, it's all rhetorical; the voters decided and that is that. Perhaps we can agree on other races - all of the commenters on the blog were very passionate and I do respect their opinions, even though I disagreed.

  3. I have a question, can't the D.A. support whomever he chooses? I read in the Times that Mike Craig said that he has had the dream and desire of becoming a Judge ever since he finished law school. So I‘m sure that the D.A. did not force Mike Craig to run for Judge. And why is it that once a Judge is elected he is expected to retain that position until he decides that he wants to retire. Isn’t that why we all enjoy the freedom of living in a democratic society? Just because someone holds a position for 20 years does not mean that he is the best man for the job.

    He can - and did.

"And why is it that once a Judge is elected he is expected to retain that position until he decides that he wants to retire."
I believe that this election just proved the fallacy of that statement.

  5. I think a lot of folks found out last night how strong the DA is - when you have a sitting senator (adley), all the judges (but especially Parker Self and Bruce Bolin), all of their political minons out working for Dewey, and the Assessor, Madden Construction, Lamar Smith, Bobby Garrett, Mike Collier, Henry Cantrell, Eric Johnson and the list goes on and on - out doing all they could to help Dewey - and with the tax lien issues out there - which was a legitimate issue to raise and should have been a death blow for any candidate - for Marvin to pull this off when it appears that it has never been done before - speaks volumes to his political strength

  6. I wonder if Larry Deen is looking over his shoulder? Just a thought.

  7. if not - he should be - Larry Deen does not have near the political strength Marvin does - he has never stuck his neck out for any body but himself - i guarantee you he told both Craig and Burchett that he was helping them behind the scenes - then i bet he sent "representatives" from his office to every event for both of them and told them he was helping - I would love to be a fly on the way when Deen calls Craig to tell him how happy he is that he got him elected -

  8. I don't disagree with anything you have said. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

  9. "I think a lot of folks found out last night how strong the DA is -"

Which is exactly why Webster and Bossier Parish need to be split.

    "Eric Johnson"

Supports the DA's candidate. Has a key to the DA's office. Just ask around.

  10. well, i actually voted for burchett even though i knew the DA was not. i'm sure he has his reasons, which after all, it is a free country. i will continue to support marvin unless , or until, he screws up. i think craig will be a good judge and now he deserves (and has earned) our support.

  11. I can assure you Eric Johnson does not have a key to the DA's OFFICE!!! Trust me on this one!

  12. the reason burchett lost is he doesnt have an (R) in front of his name. He is actually very conservative however has not changed his party like others have, like marvin, adley... I think we all know marvin was behind this, jim montgomery, piddard, jackson---every action gets a reaction, so we will see what unfolds. scary thing is there is supposed to be a seperation of powers between the da's office and the judges---having a judge in your back pocket or having a puppet is a scary thought----the blacks should be worried, if you saw craig in the commercial with a shotgun in the backdrop...kind of reminds you of bin ladin. scary

  13. A shotgun reminds you of Bin Ladin?

Thats funny because it just reminded me of the thousands of people in Louisiana that hunt deer, ducks, and other wildlife.

  14. Mike Craig won lets just leave it at that. Dewey was the one that started mud slinging first. In my oppinion I would leave both Marvin and Dean out of this. Like I just said Mike Craig Won! Get over it and quit being sore loosers!

  15. i agree, shotgun connects with all the hunters, rednecks, etc. Obviously that was his goal---up north he would look like an idiot redneck that got a degree from southern cause he couldnt get into lsu, but down here it works, i will give you that. the political system is what it is. It is not about public service, and that is why we have a system where folks don't get out and vote.

  16. Folks did get out and vote.

    And Mike won!

  17. i read burchett's campaign manager comments in the Bossier paper. Very disturbing, to say the least. he needs to go to anger managment

  18. Maybe he should call Mike's mom.

  19. Bossier Press Tribune link is on the sidebar of the blog.

  20. mike did win, congrats. they accomplished their goal of getting a law abiding, honest, fair, and decent man out of office because he didn't cooperate with the d/a. Go bossier parish! look out defense attorneys :)

i wouldn't be surprised to see mike turn on skyler at some point though, he is just as arrogant and was for boggs the first go around lol

  21. I just read the Bossier Press Tribune, that article is horrible. Mr. Collier really has some problems and should really take the advice of Pat Burchett, her heart seems to be in the right place. She is always so friendly and thankful. I can not believe the Burchett's would associate with someone of Collier's character. I hope he does not do anything crazy because this election is over and everyone needs to go on with their lives and not say something so "out of control".

  22. I agree. Burchett and his team seem arrogant and out of control. I voted for him, but he needs to get a grip on reality. His ampaign manager would serve him well to stay out of politics or at least keep quiet.

  23. I was the campaign manager's secretary. Mr. Collier asked for me to comment for him and Judge Burchett seeing that neither of them are use the computer in this capapcity, blogging, email, etc.
"Anonymous" mentioned that the Burchett camp was out of control, sore losers, need to get a grip on reality. etc, etc. Mr. Collier and the Burchetts with their sons are currently out of town together getting on with their lives and making plans for the future now that the election is over. And Please do not forget, everyone is enttilted to their opinion. Now that you have heard from the Burchett camp I hope that this will end any further conversation. As you can see Mr. Collier and the Burchetts have indeed moved on.

  27. Helen,
Your post was at 12:05 on yesterday, wasn't Collier and Burchett on KTBS last night taped right in front of the Bellevue place? I wonder if anyone can get a copy of that clip and post it on YouTUBE.

  28. Another example of the lies of the Burchett camp.
