Reinstate services at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home

Susan Duhon came to plead for her husband, whose care in a war veterans' home in Bossier City is being affected by state privatization efforts.
In Duhon's case, a $2 million cut to the five state war veterans' homes has affected the care received by her husband, Joseph Ray Duhon, a retired Air Force colonel who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and lives in the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home.
Before the budget cuts, each of the homes had a full-time physician and pharmacist on staff. But in February, the state began contracting out the services to private providers. The result, Duhon said, has been poor service, increased bureaucracy and higher co-payments for prescription drugs.
"This system is not efficient, and it certainly does not take care of the veteran in the way he or she should be cared for," Susan Duhon said.

Carolyn Roy also wrote a follow-up here in which a spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs disagreed that the quality of care has decreased.

State Senator Robert Adley said "We had a commitment from the governor's office this past year that these cuts would not occur. Apparently, they have changed their minds, in our world, your word is all you have and a handshake's all you got. I'm surprised that changed, but we will be doing everything we can to get them back. Let me make this clear, in this state, we dedicate money to ensure that our policeman, our firemen, our school teachers are never cut. We even dedicate money to ensure that our Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is not cut. These are veterans, laying in these war veterans homes that are in critical need. They should be at the top of that list."

  1. You know, this kind of stuff really gives me the reds. Sure, we can't pay for EVERYTHING.

But, we pay for so much useless crap, and to support so many bums...

    It ticks me off.

  2. Unfortunately, this is not happening in just Louisiana. It is my understanding that in Massachusetts there is a Veteran's home that does NOT have air conditioning. Some of the military units got together and 'temporarily' loaned to the hospital a mobile unit to provide the air conditioning needed in this five or six story building.... more than several years ago and the state still has not approved of any assistance for them. Of course, that's just a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the cuts. When local military units dip into their own personal pockets to help provide basic needs for veterans, it's because they KNOW there probably won't be ANY care for them when the time comes. Thank you for this post.

  3. This Adley guy keeps pissing the governor off and it just hurts the good Republicans of Bossier and the veterans worst of all. When is he up for election? We need someone else.

  4. Perhaps if senator adley had even an ounce of respect in the senate - he could muster the votes to overcome this cut - but seeing as how he has sought to alienate himself from his fellow senators and the governor's office - it will be a long time before his district sees any assistance from the state. But at least we won't have to worry about those pesky energy drinks and all the legislators will be eligible for a raise if adley has his way. Way to go senator - really making sure your district is well represented in the legislature

  5. Serious question here. While I agree that our veterans should received superior treatment and are not and have not been ever taken care of in the way they should have been. But how is it the states responsibility to pay for this and not the U.S. governments responsibility?

Adley - you should resign so your district has a chance in the legislature - we would do better with no representation
