Scam Alert

UPDATE: I emailed the Credit Union with this information and received this reply:
Mr. Wells,
You were absolutely correct. This is a very big scam. We have been getting calls all week. They are using all different numbers to call back on. Tell everyone you know about this, so that they will not give out any information.
Thanks,
Cindy

Just got a message on my cell phone that says:
Regional Healthcare FCU Alert:
Your Card has been Deactivated.
Please contact us at 318-965-6734 to Activate your Card.

Regional Healthcare Federal Credit Union is affiliated with Christus Schumpert, so I went to their website. They have this message up, so this must be an ongoing scam:
FRAUD ALERT!!! DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR ACCOUNT OR DEBIT CARD NUMBER-EVEN IF YOU RECEIVE A PHONE CALL TELLING YOU TO! THESE ARE FRAUDULENT CALLS!
Since I don’t have an account there, I was sure it was a scam. This seems to verify it.
I will pass it on.
Please, if you do have an account there don't fall for this. Their website assures everyone that they will never send text messages dealing with your account, or ask for your debit card number.

  2. After I blogged this I called the number for the heck of it, of course they ask for your 16 digit account number so they can 'reactivate' it.
Hopefully people are aware that no legitimate organization will do business like this.

  4. Thanks for warning people about this.
Unfortunately, my fellow members of Carter Federal Credit Union need to be fore-warned about unauthorized debits being sneaked out of accounts by this credit union which was previously a fine upstanding organization for many years. I went there today to withdraw some of my savings, which I needed to deposit in my checking account at the bank. I did not take money there to buy a money order, I just went there to withdraw my own money. I asked that my withdrawal be made payable to myself because the government now considers cash transactions to be suspicious, and of course walking out of there with the cash would have made me attractive to criminals. As I was walking to the parking lot, I saw that my new balance was less than expected, so I found magnifying glasses and found that an unauthorized "Miscellaneous Debit" had been taken from my account, in addition to the withdrawal that I had made. I returned to the cashier, and when she told me that the charge was for writing me a check to return my own money to me, I asked that she just take the expensive piece of paper back, and pay me in US currency. They absolutely refused to do so. It is hard to believe than anyone holding your money would have the audacity to charge you a substantial fee to simply write you a check to return your own money to you. And they did not tell me that I owed money for this, and ask how I wished to pay them. They kept silent about the charge, and made an unauthorized debit from my account. Sneaky, huh, and how many of us who need magnifying glasses to read have had these debits removed from our savings and never realized it.?
